Our Safety Pillars

Five Pillars of Our HSE Framework

Every project is governed by these five core HSE pillars enforced from the first day on site to final handover.

PPE Compliance

Personal protective equipment is mandatory on all Techies Kenya sites at all times. No exceptions no shortcuts.

  • Hard hats on all active sites
  • High-visibility vests at all times
  • Safety footwear — steel-toe boots
  • Harness & fall arrest for heights
  • Gloves, goggles & ear protection
  • Daily PPE inspection checks

Site Safety Inspections

Structured site safety inspections are conducted regularly to proactively identify and eliminate hazards before they cause harm.

  • Pre-work site safety checks
  • Weekly structured inspections
  • Hazard identification & reporting
  • Non-conformance tracking
  • Corrective action follow-up
  • Monthly HSE management review

Toolbox Talks

Daily toolbox talks ensure every team member is briefed on site-specific hazards, safe work procedures and emergency protocols.

  • Daily pre-work safety briefings
  • Task-specific hazard discussion
  • Emergency response review
  • Lessons learned sharing
  • Attendance & sign-off records
  • Supervisor-led engagement

Working at Heights

Our teams are fully trained and certified for elevated work towers, rooftops and aerial structures with zero compromise on fall protection.

  • Certified heights training (WAH)
  • Full body harness mandatory
  • Certified anchor points only
  • Two-point connection rule
  • Rescue plans in place
  • Equipment load-tested regularly

Environmental Protection

We operate with a strong environmental conscience minimising our footprint and ensuring our projects comply with all environmental regulations.

  • Waste segregation & disposal
  • No illegal dumping policy
  • Minimal vegetation disturbance
  • Spill prevention & response
  • Environmental impact assessments
  • Community impact consideration

Emergency Response

Every Techies Kenya site operates with a documented emergency response plan ensuring fast, effective action in the event of any incident.

  • Site-specific emergency plans
  • First aid kits on every site
  • Trained first aiders on team
  • Emergency contacts displayed
  • Evacuation drills conducted
  • Incident reporting & investigation

HSE Induction Programme

Every new site employee and subcontractor undergoes a comprehensive HSE induction before commencing any work on a Techies Kenya project covering site rules, hazards, emergency procedures and PPE requirements.

Working at Heights (WAH) Training

All personnel working above 2 metres are certified WAH-trained with annual refresher courses, practical assessments and equipment competency checks before any elevated work commences.

First Aid & Emergency Response Training

All Techies Kenya supervisors hold valid first aid certifications. First aid kits are present on every site, and emergency response plans are documented, displayed and tested regularly.

Permit to Work (PTW) System

High-risk activities including electrical work, confined space entry, hot works and elevated works require formal Permit to Work authorisation ensuring rigorous hazard assessment before any high-risk task begins.

Incident Reporting & Investigation

All near misses, incidents and accidents are reported, investigated and documented. Root cause analysis is conducted and corrective actions are tracked to closure preventing recurrence and improving site safety continuously.

Risk Management

How We Manage Site Risk

Every Techies Kenya project begins with a formal risk assessment. We identify, evaluate and control hazards before work starts.

All hazards are managed through engineering controls, administrative controls and PPE in that hierarchy of control order.

Our 5-Step Risk Management Process

1
Hazard Identification

Walk-through surveys, job safety analysis (JSA) and consultation with site teams to identify all foreseeable hazards.

2
Risk Evaluation

Each hazard is rated by likelihood and consequence to determine risk level informing prioritisation of control measures.

3
Control Implementation

Engineering, administrative and PPE controls are implemented in the correct hierarchy to eliminate or reduce risk to acceptable levels.

4
Monitoring & Review

Controls are monitored throughout the project and reviewed after any changes in scope, site conditions or personnel.

5
Continuous Improvement

Incidents, near misses and audits feed back into our risk management process continuously improving our HSE performance.

Our Policies

HSE Policy Statements

Techies Kenya's HSE policies are developed in accordance with the Kenya Occupational Safety and Health Act, international standards and the requirements of our key clients including Safaricom OHS vetting standards.

"Techies Kenya is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, visitors and the communities in which we operate."

Techies Kenya Management
Techies Kenya is committed to the health and safety of all workers and stakeholders. We will eliminate or minimise all foreseeable workplace hazards, comply with all applicable OHS legislation, provide adequate resources for HSE management, and continuously improve our safety performance through training, monitoring and review.
We are committed to protecting the environment in all our operations. This includes responsible waste management, pollution prevention, minimal disturbance to natural habitats and compliance with all environmental regulations and permits applicable to our projects across Kenya and East Africa.
All work above 2 metres must be planned, supervised and carried out by trained and competent personnel using approved equipment. No work at heights shall commence without a completed risk assessment, valid Permit to Work, and confirmed availability of rescue arrangements. All workers must be certified in WAH before commencing elevated work activities.
All incidents including near misses, first aid cases, property damage and environmental spills must be reported immediately to the site supervisor. A formal incident report must be completed within 24 hours, and a root cause investigation conducted within 72 hours. All findings and corrective actions are tracked to closure and reviewed at monthly HSE meetings.
All subcontractors engaged by Techies Kenya must meet our minimum HSE standards before commencing work. This includes valid OHS registrations, current certifications for specialised work, provision of adequate PPE for their workers, and adherence to all site rules, toolbox talks and reporting requirements. Non-compliant subcontractors will be suspended from site.

Our Zero Incident Commitment

Every Techies Kenya employee has the right and the responsibility to stop any unsafe work. We believe all incidents are preventable and we work every day to prove it.
